USPGA Results

The following sections show USPGA Results from the first match play competition through to the latest stroke play results. The format of the PGA Championship was changed from match play to stroke play in 1958 because of falling popularity and pressure from the Television Companies.

No amateurs have ever been permitted to play for The Wanamaker Trophy, named after Rodman Wanamaker, who helped instigate the event in 1916.

The tournament has been dominated by American professionals. No European golfer has won the event since 1930 although there have been several winners from the Southern Hemisphere in recent years.

The tournament's status was established during the 1920s when Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen won a total of seven titles between them. Although the event carries a lesser profile than the Masters, US Open or The British Open, it perhaps offers the best chance of achieving the status afforded to a Major winner.

Since the first tournament in 1916, the event has been played at 70 different venues.
