US Open Golf Results
The following sections provide listings of US Open Golf results from the very first tournament in 1895.
Championship golf began in the United States in October 1895, with the first US Amateur Championship won by Charles Blair Macdonald. The first US Open Championship was played on October 4, 1895, and was won by an Englishman, Horace Rawlins.
The winners’ prize that year was $150 and the total purse was $325. Contrast this with the 2005 US Open where the winner's share was $1,170,000 from a purse $6,500,000.
In the early years the Championship was dominated by experienced British players until 1911 when John J. McDermott became the first American winner. From that year the event has been dominated by native American golfers.
