Swing Set Up
The swing set up procedure following is a natural progression from the previous sections describing the grip, stance and posture. This narrative provides a stepping stone between the basic golf fundamentals that we have discussed and the golf swing itself.
The Grip
shows us the correct method for gripping the club shaft in order to return the clubface square at impact.
The Stance
and
Posture
sections show us how to address the ball relative to ball position and the correct posture we must adopt.
We now need to adopt a set up procedure combining all of these factors to enable us to execute the swing correctly and eliminate any golf swing problems.
Ball position has been discussed earlier and for a mid iron we know that the ball should be forward in our stance by abot 2" from the centre of the stance. Position of the hands relative to the ball is also important.
Referring to Fig 1, we can see that the ball is placed slightly forward of the centre of the stance as discussed earlier.
The left arm and shaft of the club should form a straight line
from the ball to the shoulder. The head should be positioned slightly behind the ball.
Looking at Fig 2, ensure that the posture is correct with the knees slightly flexed. The arms should be hanging downwards and not stretching outwards towards the ball. Body weight should be evenly distributed on the balls of the feet.
The feet, hips and shoulders should be aligned parallel with the target line, not pointing to the intended target.
Ensure that the arms, hands and wrists are not tense.
We now have a good foundation established, leading on to the
