Swing Plane Training Aids
Swing plane training aids allow the amateur to maintain one of the more important aspects of the golf swing in keeping to a correct swing plane. You may have read in magazines etc. of imagining a circle of glass resting on the shoulders and inclined towards the ball position. If the club is kept just above the imaginary glass on the back swing and just below the glass on the downswing then this will lead to a desirable in-to-out swing path.
The Plane Stick
is a training aid which assists the golfer in achieving a correct swing plane as well as helping to cure faults with excessive movement of the head, swaying of hips and follow through. The device provides golfers with physical reference points, so they know what their body is doing throughout the swing, providing instant feedback. An ideal swing path is one where the club is taken back on a slightly outside or straight back path on the takeaway, to a slightly inside path on the downswing. This creates a swing plane which allows the club to stay on the target line longer before and after impact.
Swinging a bolf club on the correct swing plane gives a golfer the best chance of hitting shots that are straighter and longer. It is estimated that 90% of all amateur golfers suffer from swing plane related problems. The Plane Stick
and instructional video teaches the golfer how to swing on this correct swing plane.
Another of the swing plane training aids, Inside Approach, was developed to give golfers a visual understanding of where the club needs to be swung as it approaches the impact zone. To hit solid, accurate shots, the clubface must be square or squaring at impact and the club must be approaching the ball from an inside path. The design of this device gives golfers immediate feedback on whether they have accomplished this task.
If the downswing is too steep or from out-to-in, it makes it very difficult for the hands and arms to return the clubface square, the result of which is usually an open clubface at impact causing a slice. If you square the clubface when swinging from out-to-in, you will hit a pulled shot. When the club is swung down on the correct path, it promotes the proper sequence of movements necessary for your arms and hands to naturally square the clubface. Some golfers have a tendency to hit pushes and hooks. These ball flights are also a result of a poor swing path, however, now from the inside or underneath the correct swing plane.
The Inside Approach
is designed to correct both of these undesirable swing paths by giving you safe and instant feedback on whether you have swung the club on the correct path. A cylindrical cushion is attached to a plastic stand aimed at the target line. A golf ball is placed under the front of the cushion and the golfer makes his swing. A poor swing will result in the golfer hitting the cushion. If your swing path is correct you will miss the cushion. The cushion, if hit, is designed to safely break away thus not harming you or your clubs. This immediate feedback is, by far, the most effective method of training.
The Inside Approach is also available in the UK and Europe from
