Masters History

Masters history tells us that event, held during April each year and always played at Augusta National Golf Course, attracts one of the strongest fields of the year. The course is famous worldwide as being one of the most beautiful with manicured fairways and fast greens.

Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia, opened in December, 1932 and the Masters golf tournament was inaugurated in 1934. Construction had begun in 1931 by Bobby Jones who hired Alister Mackenzie as the golf course architect. Bobby Jones, along with Clifford Roberts, decided on this as the venue for a new golf tournament.

The tournament was originally called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. It was not until 1938 that the name was changed to the Masters.

The Green Jacket became the symbol of membership of the exclusive Augusta National Golf Club. The famous Green Jackets were first presented to the winner in 1949.The first golfer to receive a Masters Green Jacket was Sam Snead.

The man who suggested the first Champions’ Dinner was Ben Hogan. It was he who hosted the inaugural Champions Dinner in 1952 and it has been held each year since. Attendees of the Masters Club, the group who attend the Champions Dinner, is limited to past Masters Champions, with a few exceptions such as Bobby Jones, Clifford Roberts and ensuing club presidents. The previous year's champion becomes host for the dinner and selects the menu. At the dinner, he is presented with an inscribed gold locket as his welcome into the Masters Club and part of Masters History.

The first Par-3 Contest was held in 1960, and it's been played every year since. The contest is held on Wednesday, the day before the tournament, and is open to everyone entered for that year's Masters, together with former champions and Honorary Invitees. Another interesting part of Masters History is that no one who has won the Par 3 Tournament has ever won the The Masters in the same year.

Golfers gain entry into the Masters by special invitation or by meeting one of 17 requirements as follows:

With the worlds best golfers vying for the title each year, it is no surprise that a high quality winner emerges fom the 90 or so competitors. The Masters Results page provides a listing of all past champions along with other interesting facts.
