Basic Rules of Golf
This section on the basic rules of golf outlines the rules and golf etiquette which the average amateur golfer will frequently come across during any normal round of golf. The game of golf has always followed the principles of good sportsmanship, discipline and courteousness relying on the integrity of the player to abide by the rules of golf and to display due consideration to fellow golfers.
The Rules of Golf are governed by the
Royal and Ancient Club of St Andrews
and the
United States Golf Association.
Reference should be made to these two bodies for a an explanation of the rules of golf. Full details of the rules can be found within The Royal and Ancient Golf Club Rules of Golf and the USGA Rule Book.
Our basic rules of golf web pages are designed to provide an overview of the situations that golfers will encounter more frequently during their golf matches.
We begin with a discussion on
Golf Etiquette
which all golfers, new or experienced, should endeavour to implement whilst on the golf course to enable all to enjoy a stress free game.
The various
Formats
are discussed to provide an understanding of the differences between match play, stroke play, stableford etc.
Moving on through
General Golf Rules
and discussion of the varous rules that involve
The Ball
we give an insight to some of the rules that golfers need to be aware of on
The Teeing Ground,
Through the Green
and on
The Putting Green.
Unfortunately most of us tend not to strike the ball in to the middle of fairways and greens every time and we encounter many
Hazards
and
Obstructions
which we need to be aware of as we continue our journey around the golf course.
